Hydrodynamics

Theoretical Astrophysics Group Cologne (TAC)

  1. I.Physikalisches Institut | University of Cologne

Summer 2019

NEWS:

1st lecture takes place on April 11

On April 4th at 10am, you will be able to sign up, if you haven’t done so using KLIPS until then.

Overview:

The module consists of a lecture (2 hours / week) plus tutorials (exercise class 2 hours / week). The tutorials will include the programming of (M)HD solver(s) and therefore basic knowledge in a programming language is necessary to successfully complete the course!

Topics:

  1. Basic concepts in hydrodynamics

  2. Equations of ideal fluids, sound and potential waves

  3. Viscous fluids

  4. Hydrodynamical instabilities, Turbulence

  5. Basic numerical methods used in fluid dynamics at high Reynolds numbers (Finite-Volume / SPH)

  6. Development of an MHD solver

Who can participate?

BSc / MSc students with a basic knowledge in theoretical physics. Astrophysical knowledge is good but not necessary.

Programming skills are mandatory in order to successfully participate in the tutorials.

Aim:

Understanding the fundamental concepts of hydrodynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics. Understanding the basic computational methods to simulate fluid flows.
